Be remarkable

(back to posts)

If you want to see the world's perpetual plainness, post a job description and wait for the applications to roll in.

No matter the role, four out of five applications are a waste of time. In 2025, most think sending in just a CV is enough. Who bothers with cover letters? In these CVs, some list fancy schools or big-name companies. Others include a link to a side project. Drowning in a sea of sameness, recruiters take what they can get. Marginal differences win. Virtually no one truly stands out.

Why don't applicants reach out to someone at the company directly? Why don't they write a two-page summary of the employer's current challenges or future frontiers? Why don't they send the hiring manager a book that might help them grow? When I was looking for a job, standing out was so easy.

If you're unremarkable, why would you deserve what you're hoping for?
Life becomes much easier when you stand out. Be remarkable.
