The most important elements of a complex system are its invariant terminal units - its ITUs. They are super simple building blocks that give the system its power. The ITU of the human body is the cell. The ITU of an economy is the transaction.

A company has 2 ITUs: the ITU of the company's execution engine is the process. And the ITU of the company's innovation engine is the project.

Because any well-functioning complex system requires well-functioning ITUs, great leaders are in the details. Great leaders make sure the ITUs are in great shape.
